Belzebuth   Belzebuth

13% alc/vol

First brewed 1997. Served in a 10cl flute which encourages sipping. Probably the best approach.

Tasting Notes: Not surprisingly for a 13% beer it is dominated by the alcohol. Behind this is a strong Barely Wine character and a full, very tangy, moderately fruity, amber malt. Drinking it is quite fun to start with but becomes hard.

From Beer Advocate: Dark color, almost black, reddish-brown. The tan head is nothing too impressive, and did not last long, while the carbonation is also fairly low. Nose is not particularly strong, but does reveal signs of hoppiness as well as a sweet, malty toasted aroma. Already the beer was reminding me of a stout something that would become even more prominent in the taste. The flavor is predominantly malty with hints of caramel at first. It does wash over the palate a little quickly, which makes you realize that this is actually a lager. There's also a nice fizzy carbonation to go with the deep flavors. The hops and dryness come into play more around the finish, and the beer rounds out a little coffee-like.

Binchoisen Blonde   Binchoisen Blonde

6,2% v/v - 25, 33 and 75 cl bottles
50% of production

Light ale, light gold colour, slightly cloudy. Aromatized with aromatic hops, coriander and orange shell, this pure malt beer is often assimilated to a white beer.

Its subtle bitterness and sense of roundness in the way it fills the mouth make it an easy-drinking beverage, predominantly served as a drought beer. White, fine and creamy foam with good persistence.

Quintine Amber   Quintine Amber

Ellezelloise produces five regular beers, a blond and an amber ale, and a hardy Belgian stout. All of them are made in small batches and are lagered for ten days in German oak casks. They are strong, full-bodied, and very satisfying. The Quintine Amber and Blond are named for a witch of local legend. And Agatha Christie's Detective Hercule Poirrot (probably Belgium's best-known citizen, and a native son of Ellezelles) is the namesake for the "Hercule" Stout. It is the only distinctively Belgian stout, and every bit as sturdy and dapper as its namesake.

Sam Adams Chocolate   Sam Adams Chocolate

Samuel Adams partnered with Scharffen Berger Chocolate to develop their newest innovation, Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock. Tettnang Tettnanger and Spalt hops were hand-selected from the world's oldest growing area and combined with a complex selection of malts including two row Pale, Munich and caramel to create a rich and satisfying brew. This dark beer has a big, malty character that is combined with the subtle sweetness of chocolate. The chocolatiers at Scharffen Berger crafted an exclusive blend of chocolate for Samuel Adams made with cocoa beans from Ghana called forastero. Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock was aged on a bed of this chocolate to create its unique layers of flavor. As the beer matured, the fruity, tart, earthy and chocolate aromas were infused into the liquid to give the brew a complex, full-bodied taste with a velvety finish. A hint of vanilla was added to meld the symphony of flavors together.

Brooklyn Monster   Brooklyn Monster

Brooklyn Monster Ale, our dead-of-winter seasonal, is an English style barleywine. Barleywines are beers fermented to the strength of wines, usually around 10% alcohol by volume.

The high alcohol produces intensely estery flavors, giving the beers a vinous, or sherry-like character. Deep mahogany in color, Monster is cellared for three months, and unfiltered. Monsteršs aroma is redolent of sherry and hops. The palate is fruity and citrusy, and the finish is warming.

Monster is available on draught at select bars and restaurants, and also in 12oz bottles.

Availability: November-February very limited quantities in 12-oz bottles, 15.5-gal kegs and 5.2-gal kegs

Malts: British Maris Otter, Halcyon and Pipkin, Malted Wheat

Hops: Willamette, Cascade and Yakima Fuggle

Alcohol: varies year to year, 11-12%

Young's Old Nick   Young's Old Nick

Young's Chocolate   Young's Chocolate

A dark, ruby coloured stout, almost black from a distance. A distinctive chocolate flavour with a smooth and velvety finish.

Pale ale malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt, special blend of sugars, Fuggles and Goldings hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence. Melted chocolate bars are added to the boil and the essence is added after filtration.

Dead Guy   Dead Guy

Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us. In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with Maierbock as the elixir. Strangely, the association with the Grateful Dead is pure coincidence.

Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops. Dead Guy Ale is available in 22-ounce bottles, 12-ounce 6-pack, and on draft.

Smutty Pumpkin   Smutty Pumpkin

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America's brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions."

In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Maudite   Maudite

Since 1992
Type Strong Red Ale, refermented in the bottle
Alcohol: 8 % alc./vol.
Color Mahogany
Taste Subtle coriande, light spices and a hint of hops
Aroma: Spicy
Shelf Life: 5 years or more
Serving Suggestions: Pasta, stews, and heardy and spicy dishes

In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. It contains 8 % alcohol and is also the first beer brewed in America that improves with age. When served young, it is very smooth, but when served after several years of storage, its flavour is reminiscent of port. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.

Hobgoblin   Hobgoblin

"a deliciously dark, full-bodied and rich 'chocolate' malted brew "

The Legendary Hobgoblin Strong Dark Ale

It was in a shadowy corner of the old maltings in Witney that the first gurgle was heard: a delicious, dark, rich ale pouring from the cask.

A local landlord had commissioned a special brew to celebrate his daughter's wedding. Our founder, the late Chris Moss, God rest his soul, created the ale of his life - a dark, rich, and mysterious brew. What to call it though? Too much was brewed for the wedding, so a firkin of our still nameless beer was sold to a local grog shop. It went down so well, more was called for the very next day.

Chris dutifully delivered another firkin, and was stopped aghast in his tracks. What sight beheld him? A drawing of a Hobgoblin and the name had magically appeared on the beer. Was it the wanderer of the night? Was mischief afoot? Perhaps, under his gaze, a lay artist serving at the counter was so charmed with the ale, he'd been compelled to depict the character of the brew in a drawing.

From that day hence, customers would ask for The "Hobgoblin" beer, and the legendary ale was born.

Beware The Hobgoblin . . . He may work his magic on you . . .

Hobgoblin - Tasting Note

5.2% ABV 500ml bottle, 5.0% ABV in cask

Hobgoblin is a powerful full-bodied copper red, well-balanced brew. Strong in roasted malt with a moderate hoppy bitterness and slight fruity character that lasts through to the end.

Head Brewer, Jeremy Moss, has produced a full chocolate malt flavour beer by the addition of a small proportion of crystal malt and the use of Fuggles hops blended with Styrian Goldings hops. The ruby red coloured Hobgoblin is full-bodied and has a delicious chocolate toffee malt flavour balanced with a rounded moderate bitterness and an overall fruity character.

Various adaptations of the Original Hobgoblin have evolved the character into his depiction today.

Black Wych   Black Wych

"A beguiling dark, soft and seductive brew "

Wychwood Black Wych Spellbinding Stout

A tribute to the Witch Folk of Wych Wood. The mysterious character of The Black Witch in British folklore is mirrored in this beguiling brew, as black as her robes and as opaque as her motives. In folklore, the Black Witch is known to concoct potions of seduction for those lovelorn souls brave enough to approach her. But beware her charms, lest you fall under her spell too deeply.

Black Wych Tasting Note
